MMA Workout – Bas Rutten Workout

Bas Rutten is an MMA legend. His is a retired Dutch-American mixed martial artist and kickboxer. The majority of his fights were fought in between 1993 to 1999 in the Pancrase organization, but he also fought for the UFC and professionally as recently as 2006. He is a three time King of Pancrase and a former UFC Heavyweight Champion. Bas can mostly be seen now as a color commentator for various shows and organizations, such as his slot as a co-host on Inside MMA on HDNet.

“El Guapo”, as Bas Rutten is sometimes called (often by him), has a record of 28 win 4 losses and 1 draw. He is a balanced fighter with 12 wins by (T)KO, 13 wins by submission, and 3 wins by decision in mixed martial art competition. During his career he was known for his fondness of liver shots as well as doing a jumping split after his fights which he called the “Rutten Jump”. Although Bas no longer competes professionally, he is still one of the most visible activists for the sport.

In this video by Bas Rutten entitled “How To Use The All Around Fighting Tape”. It is a Bas Rutten MMA Workout and all around fighting video. The video is fairly old but it shows you how to use an audio system to direct your MMA workout. It is designed to break your breathing rhythm and make you very tired. When he says, “Defense”, you have to sprawl down to the floor. If he shouts, “Defense stay down”, then you sprawl and stay down. Once you are down in the sprawl position, you move around and continue to follow orders. If he says, “Right”, you stick your right foot out. If he says, “Left” you stick your left foot out. If he says, “Push-up”, you get the picture! In between all of these movements you will be doing various combinations of attacks with shadowboxing.

Of course, this isn’t the end all of MMA workouts. This is just one example of one particular routine that Bas Rutten has used in his training videos to work on MMA conditioning and MMA striking. The video has been around for a while and is a good view into what MMA training was like in the early days. Bas Rutten was one of the original all-around mix martial artists, before it was the sport we know today. He was able to put together all of the skills that a true mixed martial artist needs, like conditioning, grappling, striking, wrestling, defense, and mindset.
