Jens Pulver shows us part of his MMA workout to increase grip strength. Who is Jens Pulver? Jens Pulver is a mixed martial artist that is well-known for his fights in the UFC, PRIDE, and WEC organizations. He was the first UFC lightweight champion and is also known for being a coach on the MMA reality show The Ultimate Fighter 5. He has fought both in the 145 lb and 155 lb divisions. He currently has a record of 22 wins, 12 losses, and 1 draw. He holds notable wins over BJ Penn, Joe Stevenson, Caol Uno, and Rob Emerson. Most recently he has been fighting for the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organization.

Jens Pulver has a long history of fighting out of the Miletich camp in Bettendorf, Iowa. Pat Miletich created Miletich Fighting Systems. His camp is well-known for their quality MMA workouts and great MMA conditioning. Another incredible fighter that originally came out of the MFS camp was Matt Hughes, one of the best welterweight fighters ever.

In this Jens Pulver workout video, he shows us a quick tip he uses in his MMA workouts to increase grip strength.

This technique uses two tennis balls and a pull-up bar. Jens shows us that by placing a tennis ball in each hand while doing pull-ups, he is able to increase the difficulty of the pull-up without adding weight.

Jens Pulver was also featured in Men’s Fitness. There, he showed some of the various exercises others can use to train like a fighter. He states that he trains his entire body in one session with a focus on strength and endurance. This MMA workout includes, sprints, push-ups, jumping jacks, bench dips, heavy bag burpees, burpee clean and press, burpees with dumbbells, burpees, fast high knees, mountain climbers, plank jacks, split lunges, squats, squats with overhead press, shoulder circles, bent over rows, med ball touches, tire sledge, power-wheel rollouts, band pulls/snap downs, thick rope pull-ups, tennis ball pull-ups (listed in the above video), and the plate pinch.

There are five different stations in the workout. Each station utilizes a few of the exercises listed above. Jens is at each station for five minutes, repeating the exercises for that station until the 5-minute time limit is up. He then has a 60 second break before he moves on to the next station. This MMA workout is designed to simulate a 5-round fights with 5-minutes per round.

For more information on this grueling MMA workout, check out the full article at Men’s Fitness. It includes photographs of each exercise with exact information for each of the five workout stations.

Bas Rutten is an MMA legend. His is a retired Dutch-American mixed martial artist and kickboxer. The majority of his fights were fought in between 1993 to 1999 in the Pancrase organization, but he also fought for the UFC and professionally as recently as 2006. He is a three time King of Pancrase and a former UFC Heavyweight Champion. Bas can mostly be seen now as a color commentator for various shows and organizations, such as his slot as a co-host on Inside MMA on HDNet.

“El Guapo”, as Bas Rutten is sometimes called (often by him), has a record of 28 win 4 losses and 1 draw. He is a balanced fighter with 12 wins by (T)KO, 13 wins by submission, and 3 wins by decision in mixed martial art competition. During his career he was known for his fondness of liver shots as well as doing a jumping split after his fights which he called the “Rutten Jump”. Although Bas no longer competes professionally, he is still one of the most visible activists for the sport.

Checkout this Bas Rutten workout video. This particular MMA workout is pretty self-explanatory in the video, but you can check out a full description of it in the paragraph after the video.

In this video by Bas Rutten entitled “How To Use The All Around Fighting Tape”. It is a Bas Rutten MMA Workout and all around fighting video. The video is fairly old but it shows you how to use an audio system to direct your MMA workout. It is designed to break your breathing rhythm and make you very tired. When he says, “Defense”, you have to sprawl down to the floor. If he shouts, “Defense stay down”, then you sprawl and stay down. Once you are down in the sprawl position, you move around and continue to follow orders. If he says, “Right”, you stick your right foot out. If he says, “Left” you stick your left foot out. If he says, “Push-up”, you get the picture! In between all of these movements you will be doing various combinations of attacks with shadowboxing.

Of course, this isn’t the end all of MMA workouts. This is just one example of one particular routine that Bas Rutten has used in his training videos to work on MMA conditioning and MMA striking. The video has been around for a while and is a good view into what MMA training was like in the early days. Bas Rutten was one of the original all-around mix martial artists, before it was the sport we know today. He was able to put together all of the skills that a true mixed martial artist needs, like conditioning, grappling, striking, wrestling, defense, and mindset.

If anyone has been watching The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 – Heavyweights, it should be apparent that general strength training and conditioning does not necessarily translate into a good MMA workout. This season of the show has several former NFL players in it, in addition to amateur and professional mixed martial artists. Early on, it has become apparent that NFL conditioning does not equal MMA conditioning. This shouldn’t be surprising that the two don’t directly translate.

For example, let us take a look at the clinch. Training for MMA grappling in clinch fighting requires a high level of strength and endurance in the arms and legs. This could be compared to the type of physicality that is engaged on an offensive or defensive football line. The UFC matches are split into five-minute rounds, for either three or five rounds. A fighter must be able to pace himself when fighting. In order to gain the intensity and explosive movements they will need, the fighter must practice performing many weighted repetitions for a prolonged period of time. Football players can get away with training closer to what bodybuilders train, as their movements need to be powerful and explosive but only for five to ten seconds before they earn a rest. This is definitely not the case with an MMA fighter training an MMA workout.

It also became very apparent that cardio was an issue for many of the NFL players. As stated previously NFL players are able to operate at a high intensity for a very short period of time, often five to ten seconds. After that, they usually receive a large break that can be up to, or even more, than a minute long. With MMA fighters, they must take the punishment and deal it right back. They are constantly fighting a battle between expending as much energy as possible without completely gassing themselves and thus becoming vulnerable. This is where MMA conditioning is key.

There are similarities between the two sports though. Both sports take potentially bone-crushing hits over a long period of time. However, NFL players are protected from many of these hits by the equipment they wear. The only equipment an MMA fighter brings into the fight with them is their lightweight MMA gloves.

Throughout our site at Best MMA Workout, we will discuss how current MMA fighters train. We will discuss the different tactics and strategies they use, why they use them, and what type of application they have in MMA. We will also discuss how MMA training workouts differ from other sport workouts, such as bodybuilding. We will be discussing the different gear and equipment that can be used. And finally, we will also talk about building that warrior mindset that is critical for MMA fighters when they are training an MMA workout.
